1 · Who this is
Yap is an iPhone app published by Scott Watermasysk ("we," "the developer," "I"). You can reach me at the support page or @ScottW on X.
2 · What Yap collects
Yap is intentionally small. The categories of information involved are:
2.1 — Microphone audio
Yap records audio only long enough to transcribe it locally on your iPhone. Saved yaps are text transcripts stored in the app sandbox. Temporary audio is discarded after transcription, discard, retry resolution, or recovery timeout.
2.2 — Transcripts and edits
The text transcript is saved locally on your iPhone in Yap's private app container. Yap does not require an account, does not run a backend account system, and does not upload your transcripts to a Yap server.
2.3 — Crash and performance data
If you have "Share with App Developers" enabled in iOS Settings, Apple may share anonymized crash reports with us. These contain no transcript content and no audio. You can turn this off in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
3 · What Yap does not do
- Yap does not require an account, email address, or login.
- Yap does not upload your audio to any server.
- Yap does not upload your transcripts to any server we operate.
- Yap does not use third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
- Yap does not read your contacts, calendar, photos, or other apps' data.
- Yap does not sell or share information with brokers, advertisers, or partners.
4 · Permissions Yap asks for
4.1 — Microphone
Required. Without microphone access, Yap can't record. iOS will ask you to grant this the first time you tap the record button. You can revoke it any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone > Yap.
4.2 — Local transcription
Yap may request system permissions needed for local recording and transcription. You can review or revoke those permissions in iOS Settings.
4.3 — Notifications
Optional. Yap doesn't currently send push notifications.
5 · Children
Yap is not directed at children under 13. It's a utility, not a social platform, and contains no third-party content, accounts, or messaging. Parents and guardians should still supervise general iPhone use.
6 · International users
Because the app does not transmit personal data off your device, GDPR (EU), UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA (California), and similar laws have very little to apply to. You retain all rights to access, delete, or move your data — it lives on your phone, and you can delete the app to erase it.
7 · Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes — for example, if a future feature requires new data — I'll update this page and bump the date at the top. Material changes will also be called out in the app's release notes.
8 · Contact
Questions, corrections, or concerns: support page or @ScottW on X.
Plain-English version. This policy is intentionally short because Yap is intentionally small.
